Today Twitter is awash with a very special person’s name: #JackieRobinson.
That’s because America is celebrating the birthday of Jack Roosevelt “Jackie” Robinson, the legendary baseball player who broke down the sport’s colour barrier, when he became the first black Major League Baseball player of the modern era.
As well as being an incredibly talented infielder for the Brooklyn Dodgers from 1947, Jackie Robinson helped bring an end to racial segregation in professional baseball. Through a lifetime of pioneering pursuits, he handed down the baton of confidence to generations of African-American sportsmen and women. But his influence went way beyond the sports field.
Jackie’s sporting success challenged the segregation of the 1940s, and had a huge cultural impact; to this day Jackie Robinson is celebrated for contributing to the Civil Rights Movement. Always courageously standing up for his rights and outraged by injustice if he couldn’t, Jackie fought back against prejudice time and time again.
While not every day offers us good news, it’s important to remember those who have altered the world we live in today, for good.
One small way you could celebrate is by giving some change to the Jackie Robinson Foundation, a charity aiming to drive the advancement of higher education among undeserved populations, in Jackie’s memory.
And another way is by remembering how powerful the bravery, passion and commitment of one person can make such a big difference to the world.
As Jackie himself once said: “A life is not important, except in the impact it has on other lives.”
With this almighty Dodger in mind, let’s keep batting for a whole lot more awesome in the world.
